News and Information about Dogs, Cats, and Pet Products

My name is Mary Ann and I’m a Team Member/lifelong cat parent at Two Bostons! About two years ago, I moved out into an apartment for the first time and shortly after, I rescued my very own cat. Her name is Clarice and she is a spoiled princess. But here’s the thing…even princesses poop. And my princess poops a lot.  By no means am I saying that was a surprise, but the only place her litter box can fit in my apartment is about three feet away from my bed so it’s less than ideal. I’ll spare you the smelly details.

Before working at Two Bostons I was using the same “big box” brand of litter I’d always used with my prior cats, and frankly, it was the worst. I felt like I was constantly choking on litter dust, and every time Clarice used her box my entire place stunk for a good fifteen minutes. Naturally she also tracked it everywhere, including my bed, because for some reason she just loves to snuggle after a good poop.

Then I tried Boxiecat and my life was changed forever.

Obviously I was skeptical after 20+ years of using the other stuff. It just sounded too good to be true. Easy to scoop, non-tracking, and minimal smell? There was no way, but I still figured it was worth a shot. I opted to go for BoxiePro which has all the aforementioned benefits plus probiotics to make it self-cleaning. That part was extra important to me because of the close proximity to my bed. So I grabbed a bag and hoped for the best.

One of the initial things I noticed was that there was virtually no dust. With the other brand it felt like ages for my room to not smell like litter after changing it, but with Boxiecat I could actually breathe! To any readers and/or cats out there who have any sort of breathing issues like asthma, allergies, or even a general sensitivity to dust, I HIGHLY suggest checking out Boxiecat for this reason alone! You really don’t realize how much dust your litter has until you use something without any.

The tracking was also reduced substantially. On top of Clarice’s box being in my room, my apartment is also completely carpeted, so I went the whole nine yards to do what I could to prevent tracking (covered box with high walls, a mat to catch the litter as she left, etc.), but there was still always litter everywhere. Now there is almost none. I think it’d be impossible to eliminate tracking entirely, but Boxiecat has made it pretty minimal. I also have more peace of mind knowing there are anti-bacterial properties so it feels a little less disgusting to roll over in the morning and find a litter grain stuck to my cheek (I said a little).

Boxiecat is also saving me money. With the other brand, I was going through about 20+ lbs a month. I got to the point where I was scooping multiple times a day which contaminated the unused portions of the litter because the clumps would break apart which meant things got smellier faster which meant I was changing it bi-weekly. Sometimes even weekly! With Boxiecat, the clay they use is ultra absorbent, so it creates what they call “flat top clumps”. Essentially the quick absorption catches the liquid upon contact, rather than letting it seep down to the bottom of the box. It’s easier to scoop and doesn’t fall apart! I’m back to only scooping once daily, plus I only have to completely swap litter once a month*.

Now let’s talk about odor control because that’s arguably the most important thing.

It works! There is still a little odor, but like litter tracking, I don’t think it’s possible to 100% eliminate everything. I like that it neutralizes the odor, rather than just covering up the scent with a different scent. When Clarice uses her box there’s not even a 5 minute window where I’m plugging my nose, then afterwards it’s as if I didn’t even have a cat as a roommate!

So is Boxiecat worth it? Yes! Yes, yes, yes, yes three thousand times YES! I cannot get over how big of a difference this product has made. My entire place just feels so much cleaner, and now when I have guests over, my anxieties of having them walk into a stinky apartment are gone! I truly can’t recommend this product enough.

We currently carry four varieties of Boxiecat litter so you can find what’s perfect for your unique feline family! Grab some in our stores or order it online!

Taurine is one of those things you’ve probably seen mentioned all over the place lately but when you go to research, every article you find is written in medical gibberish. Fear not, pet parents, we’re here to break down exactly what it is and why your pet needs it–no dictionary required!

In a nutshell: Taurine is an amino acid that is exclusively found in animal-based proteins. It works to keep our pets’ bodies functioning properly, especially for normal vision, heart health, digestion, and reproduction.

Why it matters: While cats and dogs naturally can produce taurine, dogs just barely produce what they need and cats are physically incapable of producing enough to ensure healthy functions. While this might sound a little alarming, your furry friends can get more taurine through their diet!

Where does taurine come from: As mentioned above, taurine only naturally occurs in animal proteins, which is one of the many reasons it’s crucial for your pets to get as much meat as possible! Hearts are especially jam packed with it, but there are also supplements available. Most pet food brands are conscious about the amount of taurine in their recipes and add in additional taurine if necessary.

How to make sure your pet gets enough taurine: Feeding fresh is almost always the answer when it comes to boosting your pet’s health! Even if they only eat two fresh meals a week in addition to their current diet, you’ll see a world of difference in everything from your pet’s coat, energy levels, poop (it’ll become less smelly and smaller!), and, of course, taurine levels. Fresh food is the closest you can possibly get to what an animal would eat in the wild without actually releasing them in the woods to catch their own dinner–that means it has optimal nutritional benefits!

Another option is to start including fresh or freeze dried treats into your pet’s routine. Remember how we said that hearts are one of the best sources of taurine? You can actually feed freeze dried hearts as a yummy snack! Some of our personal favorites are the Freeze Dried Chicken Heart Bites by Fresh Is Best. It’s a single-ingredient snack that’s 100% American-made. They’re even so tasty that both dogs AND cats love them! You can check them out in our stores or order them online here.

You can also easily add daily supplements to your pet’s diet. There are quite a few good ones available but our go-to and most trusted is Herbsmith’s Taurine Boost powder. It’s as simple as adding a spoonful to your pet’s bowl and giving it a quick stir!

In conclusion: Taurine isn’t as complicated and scary as the internet makes it out to be!  Remember: if you still feel unsure, confused, or have questions, reach out to us. We aren’t kidding when we say we could talk about pet wellness all day!

When you hear the word “elixir” you might think of bubbling cauldrons and magic spells. We’re here to assure you that at Two Bostons, we’d never sell anything that might turn you or your pet into a toad.

But what exactly is an “edible elixir”? Essentially, it’s a frozen smoothie for dogs and cats that you thaw as needed and use as a meal topper! Sounds yummy, right? It comes in three different flavors, each with their own set of super-powered health benefits. You have your choice of Winter Squash Puree, Healthy Green Smoothie, and Omega Mussel Melange. What makes these especially stand out from other frozen toppers is the blend of veggies and a dash of protein? Other products typically go one way or the other, which isn’t a problem since every pet’s palate and needs differ. However, you might find that pickier pets take to Primal Elixirs faster because they get a big whiff of pork bone broth before they dig in for the first time!

Another key benefit to Primal Elixirs is the variety each recipe offers. As our regulars know, variety is crucial to a pet’s health and happiness. You wouldn’t want to eat the same meal every day for your entire life, right? Neither do your dogs and cats! But it’s not just flavor that makes each of the three elixirs unique. They’re also packed with different types of nutrients geared specifically towards various areas of your pet’s wellness!

If you’re looking to nourish your pet’s gut, then Winter Squash Puree is for you. The first ingredient is butternut squash, which is what makes it that pretty orange color! Butternut squash is known for being packed with prebiotic fiber which helps regularity and makes stools firm up. This is especially beneficial during the summer months when your pets are nosing around in grass or weeds that leave them with diarrhea. You’ll also find organic cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger to help an upset tummy, and raw apple cider vinegar for a healthy GI tract.

Ready to boost your pet’s joint health? Give Omega Mussel Melange a try! Of the three flavors, this is the most savory of the bunch, but it’s also great for animals of all ages. For older pets, this can help ease any joint pain from factors like age or arthritis, but in younger ones, it can help as a preventative for future joint issues. The main ingredient is mussels, which is somewhat of a super-seafood that’s also used in a lot of pet food, as well. They’re a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chrondroiton. You’ll also find organic turmeric and unfiltered apple cider vinegar for that extra support to the skeletal system.

Finally, there’s the Healthy Green Smoothie which resembles, you guessed it, a daily human health smoothie! It’s full of organic green goodness like antioxidant-packed kale and parsley, with some added chia seeds, coconut oil, and sardine oil for a boost of omega fatty acids and medium chain triglycerides. There’s also a blend of seven different organic mushrooms known for their medicinal immune benefits! In other words: with every bite of this elixir, your pet’s immune system will thank you.

Is your mouth watering yet? How about if we mention that they all come in 16 oz and 32 oz resealable containers that’ll fit nicely in your freezer, making feeding a snap. Live vicariously through your pet by stopping into one of our stores and grabbing an Edible Elixir today!

It’s the time of year again that so many pets and their parents dread: fireworks season. Sudden loud noises and bright lights paired with the occasional busy BBQ is a recipe for disaster for many animals. In fact, the #1 day that animals go missing is July 4th. Luckily, your pets have you as a parent, which means that as the season comes and goes, you’ll be able to keep your cats and dogs comfortable in their home!

The first step to helping your pet’s anxiety is identifying it. We’d like to invite all pet parents to read this portion, even if you don’t consider your pet to be anxious, as oftentimes anxiety can be confused for behavioral issues. What’s important to remember is that like humans, no two animals manifest their emotions in the same way. Look for abnormal behaviors. Did your potty trained dog suddenly start peeing on the couch? Did your cuddly cat hiss when you tried to pet them? Your animals aren’t just suddenly doing bad things just to annoy you. They’re trying to tell you something! (Keep in mind that behavioral changes could correlate to a variety of issues and to contact your vet if you think your pet is ill.)

When we think “anxious dog or cat”, we picture our beloved furbabies cowered in a corner shaking and whimpering, but oftentimes that is not the case. Here are a few things to look for:

  • Destructive behavior such as chewing and scratching or unusual amounts of damage to toys or other items
  • Social withdrawal, hiding, and aggression
  • Excessive barking/meowing
  • Shaking, panting, and drooling
  • Suddenly becoming clingy (it might feel like a good thing but make sure your pet is getting lovey dovey for the right reasons!)
  • Peeing/pooping/vomiting around the house

If you recognize any of these symptoms in your own pet, don’t worry as there are plenty of ways you can help! What’s important now is figuring out what their triggers are and doing what you can to help minimize their stress.

Sudden loud noises tend to be a pretty universal cause of anxiety in pets, but if you think about it; a lot of humans feel the same way! We’ve all been startled before. The only difference is that after that initial jump, we typically find an explanation for the noise and can be on guard for it again. Animals, on the other hand, don’t have that luxury. While you can’t get rid of things like fireworks and thunderstorms, there are still options to make them less scary.

PRO TIP: Rather than treating your pet’s anxiety right when or after the fireworks/storms/etc. start, try to prepare them at least a 45 minutes – 1 hour ahead of time, if possible. Having your pet go into a stressful situation already somewhat relaxed is going to be more effective than waiting until the last minute. Think about it as if it’s a headache: it’s easier to manage if you take an Advil the second you feel your head start to get sore rather than waiting until it’s at its worst to do anything!

Thundershirt

The Thundershirt is the product you’ve heard a ton about but probably haven’t tried yet! We know that was the case for a lot of our Team Members when they first started out, but now most of them (along with a little over 85% of users) absolutely swear by it! The concept is simple: soft fabric creates a swaddling effect to make your pet feel safe and secure. Think of it like a hug! We currently sell them online (click here to order now!) but you can also come into any of our stores to grab one of your own. Our Team will even help make sure you pick the right size!

CBD

There’s a lot we love about CBD, but one of our favorite things is that it works wonders when it comes to anxiety. Keep in mind, though it is made from the hemp plant, there is absolutely no THC. It also won’t turn your pet into a drooling zombie! What it will do is gently ease your pet into a state of calm. Some of our regulars have also reported pets taking the best naps of their lives! There are a lot of different options to choose from, but a great place to start is the Full Spectrum CBD oil by Super Snouts. We have it online to order here, but we also carry it in our stores where you can also get a free personalized consultation from a member of our Team!

Another great CBD option to try is Treatibles. Just like the name suggests, they’re bite-sized hard chews for dogs and cats that are infused with hemp oil! They come in three flavors–turkey, blueberry, and pumpkin–so even picky pets will find something they love. Like the oil, you can grab a pack in our stores or order them online!

Herbal Remedies

Have you ever felt relaxed after drinking a cup of tea or lighting your favorite candle? That’s exactly what supplements can do! Companies like Herbsmith and Earth Animal–yes, the brand with the yummy No-Hides!–have special blends of herbs that can help naturally relax your pet. You’ll find things like chamomile and lavender as some of the ingredients. Typically they come in the form of drops or chews, and if you choose to go the drops route, you might find that just the scent leaves you feeling more relaxed!

If you’re looking for drops, “Calm Down” drops by Earth Animal have always had the best results for us personally. You can find them in any of our stores or order online here! If chews are more your thing then try out Herbsmith’s “July Third” for some immediate relief. Like the Calm Down drops, you can find July Third in-store or online here.

Relaxation Squares

What dog doesn’t love peanut butter? If you have a dog who turns their nose up at supplements and wiggles their way out of the Thundershirt, give these Heavenly Hounds treats a try! These are a favorite of both regulars and Team Members at Two Bostons because they’re simple and effective. Hidden in the peanut buttery goodness is a blend of herbs that will make their troubles melt away. The best part is that they’re compact and fit nicely in your purse or wallet so you can always be prepared for sudden noisy situations or travel. You can stock up in our stores or order them online here!

Our final and most important tip for pet anxiety is to remind everyone once more that no two pets are the same. What helped your neighbor’s dog might not help your cat and vice versa. Animals are just as unique as us and sometimes it might take a little experimenting to see what works for your furry friends and what doesn’t. Even if you feel like you’ve tried everything out there, there’s usually something you just haven’t discovered yet, and that’s where we come in. Give us a call, send us an email, or pay us a visit. Together we can put the fun back in the 4th!

Did you know that by providing regular dental care you can add years to your pet’s life?

There are a lot of products on the market today that boast being able to brush your pet’s teeth without you needing to lift a finger. A lot of those products also only get half the job done. Sure, the leading Big Box brand gets rid of some plaque and temporarily covers the scent of bad breath, but it also contains unnecessary ingredients that can prove to be harmful towards your pets in the long-run. You’ve already done such a great job giving your pet the right food; why ruin all that with bad dental sticks?

Just like people, animals require a dental routine, too.  Most people believe that all they need to do is give their pets dry food to keep their teeth clean, but let’s think about that one for a bit… Would you ever say, “Hmm, I don’t have enough time to brush my teeth before I need to leave for work, so I’ll just eat a granola bar on the way there. That should do the trick!” If you do think this, let us know when you’re on your way and we’ll have a mint ready for you. If you think, “That’s gross!” then we’re on the same page.

Eating dry food doesn’t keep your pet’s teeth clean. In fact, it actually leaves a film on their teeth. For those who don’t want to physically brush their pet’s teeth (Let’s be honest, that’s most of us.), let Brushless Toothpaste chews help check this daily task off your list!

Here’s how it works:

Step one: Buy Ark Naturals Brushless Toothpaste.

Step two: Give your pet Ark Naturals Brushless Toothpaste.

Step three: Pat yourself on the back for saving so much time and then maybe even take a nap because you earned it!

Ark Naturals Brushless Toothpaste are our go-to for many reasons. First and foremost, they’re easy. Just give your pup a stick twice a day. As a reminder, you could even do it when you’re brushing your own teeth! Secondly, it’s effective. The outer part is rough with ridges that help scrape plaque and leftover food, while the inside has a patented toothpaste to freshen and cleanse the breath!

For years, Brushless Toothpaste has been one of most popular grooming items at Two Bostons. Now, it’s available in a value box where you basically get 3 bags for the price of 2, making this amazing product even better!

With the weather getting warmer, we’ve been finding ourselves getting just as excited as our dogs when it’s time to go for a walk. Sure, winter snow is pretty to look at, but nothing beats taking a stroll down a sunny sidewalk while you breathe in the fresh springtime air. The only downside is that you’re not the only one spending more time outside. More hustle and bustle on your favorite walking paths mean more distractions (and temptations) for your dog.

We know it’s easier to just clip the leash to your pup’s collar, and we also know that sometimes even clipping the leash on is easier said than done, but we promise that adding one extra step will make a huge difference when taking walks! See, when you’re just clipping the leash to the collar, you’re putting the strain of every last car, squirrel, and bike right onto your dog’s neck. Meanwhile, while your pup is getting choked, your arm is getting pulled halfway out of its socket trying to maintain any semblance of control. The job of a harness is to take all the pressure off your dog’s neck (and your arms) and move it to a more central point on their body, making a walk in the park feel like…well…a walk in the park! You have firmer control over your dog, who in turn, doesn’t choke. It’s a win-win all around.

Like most things in life, though, not all harnesses are created equally, and the last thing you want is to go through all the effort picking, sizing, and then putting a harness on your dog just for them to slip out by the time you’re at the end of the driveway! We’ve met our fair share of customers with dogs who happen to be expert Harness Houdini’s, and even more who are far from expert but still try their best to wriggle free. We always point them towards the Freedom Harness by 2 Hounds Design.

The Freedom Harness does exactly as it says: it makes you feel like there’s nothing there! The American-made nylon webbing is lightweight, featuring a Swiss velvet-lined chest strap to prevent chafing, and has been tested to pull up to 3800 lbs. If your dog is able to break through that then we’re going to be honest with you, it’s possible you actually own an elephant or maybe a very large walrus.

What truly makes the Freedom Harness unique, though, is the patented “control loop” on the back. That single little strap offers a wide variety of ways to hook up your leash to give yourself the proper amount of control based on the situation, making it perfect for anything from training a new puppy to a quick trip around the block to hiking in the woods! 2 Hounds Design also carries some of the most diverse sizes of any brand on the market, and is able to fit dogs anywhere from 14 lbs to 250+ lbs, so dachshunds and dalmatian owners alike can enjoy the benefits!

If you’re interested in learning more, we carry several varieties in-store and online. You can also stop into any of our locations to get a custom fitting for FREE!

Happy Earth Day! Can you believe our planet is over 4.5 billion years old? That’s 31.5 billion in dog years! We know it can be tough to be eco-friendly 100% of the time, but with the weather getting warm and the sun staying out later, hopefully you’ll find some time to do a little gardening, keep the lights off longer, or take your pup for a walk.

Before you grab your leashes and shovels, though, check out some of our favorite brands who celebrate Earth Day all year round!

Open Farm

Open Farm is known for being one of the most transparent brands of pet food there is; but did you know they’re one of the most eco-friendly, too? Everything they do is done with sustainability in mind, which is why they’re so picky about where they source their ingredients from. They work with family farms who actively practice sustainable farming techniques, and refuse to settle for produce that isn’t organic or local. What really puts Open Farm ahead of the pack, though, is their careful support of our oceans. They partner with organizations like Ocean Wise and Seafood Watch to make sure they aren’t overfishing or hurting vulnerable species of marine life.

Open Farm is also working to make sustainable packaging since 95% of pet food bags aren’t recyclable. That’s why they partnered with TerraCycle–a company where you can ship your used bags for free to be recycled into new products. We think this is such a great idea that we’ll do the recycling for you! Just bring your empty Open Farm bags back to Two Bostons and we’ll take care of the rest.

Beco Pets

This is one of the newer brands to hit our shelves, and we think you’ll be just as excited as we are! The Beco Bowl is a feeding dish made completely from bamboo and rice husk–two of the most renewable resources in the world. What’s especially awesome about Beco Bowls is that none of the quality is lost during the sustainable production. It’s still just as durable, if not more, than other bowls, with the added benefit of being 100% biodegradable!

And did we mention it’s dishwasher safe?

Planet Dog

There’s a lot to love about Planet Dog, but one of our favorite things is that they live up to their name. In addition to the peppermint scented, non-toxic durability that they’re known for, they also strive to be eco-friendly! By choosing to make their products in the USA, they minimize harmful emissions from overseas transport, while also providing plenty of American jobs. Plus, when it’s time for your pup to get a new Planet Dog toy (since we all know nothing is indestructible!) you can even recycle the old one!

Earth Rated

Earth Rated does what they can to make poop pickup as easy as possible, whether on a walk with your dog or scooping your cat’s litter. All of their bags are made either from vegetable starches or recycled materials, and the scented ones use natural essential oils rather than artificial scents. The cores the rolls come on are made of recycled paper or packaging material, and any products that come off the line with imperfections are donated to shelters rather than being thrown away. It’s safe to say these bags are perfect for keeping both your yard and the Earth green!

Boxiecat

While we’re on the topic of poop, we just have to talk about our go-to litter, Boxiecat. We know kitty litter can be heavy, so think about all the overseas transport emissions waste they save by being made in the USA! They also use recyclable shipping boxes that are as closely fit to the bags as possible to eliminate any excess space or need for packing fillers. If you pay a visit to their offices, you’ll see their work environment is powered by 100% renewable energy, and the factories they use to make the litter, itself, all recycle. But perhaps most importantly, since it’s made from chemical-free, natural clumping clay, Boxiecat litter is completely biodegradable!

It’s pretty safe to say that green is one of our favorite colors, which is why these are just a few of the dozens of eco-friendly products we proudly partner with!

It’s springtime, which means it’s time for us to finally go outside without running the risk of becoming a popsicle! Unfortunately, fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes all have the same idea. We’ve already seen a lot of pet parents coming in to pick up products that preemptively combat these warm weather pests, but we’ve noticed something always seems to be missing from their baskets.

Milk thistle is a pet parent essential when it comes to giving your furry friends any sort of medication or supplement. It has been used medicinally for hundreds of years, with its origins lying in Southern Europe and Asia. The plant itself looks like a prickly weed with a bright purple flower, but believe it or not, it’s actually a close relative of the daisy.

It’s very possible that you’re already familiar with milk thistle because it can be found in most stores that carry human supplements. Maybe you’ve even already used it yourself, which is great, especially because many of the benefits people receive can be seen in cats and dogs, as well!

The number one use of milk thistle is liver health; and that goes for both pets and people. It acts as a sort of cleansing agent to help the body–specifically the liver–process toxins ingested with medication, antibiotics, heavy metals, and free radicals. If an animal is, or ever has been, on any medication, milk thistle should definitely be integrated into their routine. This includes topical ointments, as they can still enter the bloodstream, bringing toxins along with them. Even the pet parents who choose to take a holistic health approach should have a little milk thistle on hand, because with the amount your animal is exposed to on a regular basis, it’d be impossible to keep them 100% toxin-free.

In addition to liver protection, milk thistle can help ease allergy symptoms, which is especially crucial during pollen and ragweed season. There are also skin benefits, and functional boosts to vital organs like the kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas, and stomach.

Milk thistle can be ingested orally, and it’s as easy as sprinkling a bit of powder on your pet’s food. In fact, we recommend that you only give it to your pet in powdered form, since that’s when it’s most pure. Herbsmith is our go-to when it comes to what we give our own pets. Aside from going out and picking it yourself, this is the purest form you can get it in, which is something especially important for a product that’s meant to help your pets avoid toxins! Part of that–and this goes for any brand–is because keeping the milk thistle in a powdered form means it is going through minimal processing, whereas it loses certain beneficial qualities when made into tablet or oil form.

Remember: any cat or dog can benefit from milk thistle, even if they’re on a strictly all-natural diet (which includes feeding raw!). But this time of year is even more crucial than any other since so many of us are introducing repellents to our pets. Toxins are great at hiding in unexpected places, so it’s best to kick them out before they have the chance to let themselves in.

If you’ve been following along with our travel blogs, you should be an expert on navigating airports with pets! Well…maybe not an expert, but certainly someone with more confidence than the average traveler! With the hustle and bustle of airports, you can never know what to expect 100% of the time, but hopefully you’re at least feeling better prepared. If you’re just joining us, or missed an installment, be sure to check out Part I and Part II for helpful tips, tricks, and links!

We’ve already covered security, leashes, and carriers, so for our Grand Finale, we present to you:

The Ultimate Airport Pet Packing List

The Basics

  • Paperwork
    • Remember what we talked about in our previous blogs. Always have copies of your tickets, any appropriate identification for you/your pet, and–if you’re having any extra anxieties–copies of rules and regulations from the official sites of airlines/airports just in case you need to pull them out.
  • Leashes, harnesses, and TSA approved carriers (check out Part II for more details)
  • A collar with a tag that has the pet’s name, address, and best number to reach you. We suggest your cell since you won’t exactly be able to answer your home phone if your pet runs off in an airport!
  • Medication
    • Whether you’re a human or an animal, you should always keep your meds in your carry-on. Lost luggage = lost medication if it’s not with you at all times. If you have any liquid medications, then be sure to check protocol on the TSA website!
  • CBD or Anti-anxiety supplements
    • These work absolute wonders for scared cats and dogs! We always suggest Super Snouts as a go-to brand for CBD products, but if you prefer herbs and essential oils, then Herbsmith also has some great stuff.
  • Gulpy Water Bottle
    • Hydration is key in any situation! Rather than carry around bulky dishes for water, just tuck this in your bag! It’s about the size of a regular water bottle and easily transforms into a portable water bowl for your pet.
  • Food
    • Freeze Dried is our strongest recommendation for travel. Most quality food brands design their recipes to be interchangeable with one another, so if your pet typically eats wet or frozen food, they should be okay to temporarily switch to freeze dried for ease of traveling.
  • Bowl
    • Like for water, it’s great to have a portable food bowl! The Gulpy Water Bottle can actually work great for food, as well, or you could try out a collapsible bowl like the awesome ones that Kurgo makes.
  • Waste Bags
  • “Pee-pee” Pads
    • Since there won’t be a ton of places for your pet to relieve themselves, we always advise people to bring along some puppy training pads for sort of a “makeshift bathroom”. We love the Gridlock Pads because they’re super absorbent and help neutralize odors.  They can also be cut down to size to make a lining for carriers!

The Bonuses

  • Treats
    • This one seems pretty obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people forget to grab them in the midst of all the other packing chaos! Treats are not only a great reward for being brave, but also a great way to distract from outside stimuli.
  • Toys
    • We know your pets have a toy that they absolutely adore, but just remember that noise-making toys are best left at home. Like we talked about in previous blogs, it’s important to be courteous to others, and most people aren’t going to want to listen to squeaking or jingling for hours on end! Chew toys and plush toys with no noisemakers inside are the best ways to go.

Have you ever flown with pets before? Are there any tips you’d like to share? Tell us about it in the comments!

We’ve all been there. We find the cutest little dog toy. It’s fluffy and colorful and looks at you with big cartoon eyes that just seem to say “don’t worry, your dog could never destroy someone as adorable as me!” Then you bring it home, and sure enough, the toy does, in fact, get destroyed. But what if we were to tell you that we knew of a plush toy that can withstand your pup’s jaws…and what if we told you it was also…machine washable??? Too good to be true? We thought so at first, too.

Meet Fluff & Tuff, one of our favorite plush brands that opened a very new, very cuddly door of playtime opportunities for our dogs!

First and foremost, Fluff & Tuff values safety above all else. One of the biggest issues with many plush toys is that you don’t know what they’re made of or where they come from. Dogs have been known to get sick from ingesting the materials of cheap toys, or choke on the squeakers inside them. There have also been issues with foreign objects like plastic or metal accidentally getting stuffed inside, leading to illness and even fatality. That’s because the safety standards for dog toys are typically much lower than human-grade products. Needless to say, we find that unacceptable, you probably find that unacceptable, and Fluff & Tuff definitely finds that unacceptable.

All the materials used are American-made and non-toxic, right down to the polyester filling and squeaker inside. To avoid choking hazards, every detail (eyes, mouths, etc.) are embroidered on, rather than using plastic that could fall off. The squeaker has also gotten a safety upgrade by being sewn in a little pouch, so you can rest easy knowing that your pup won’t choke. They’re also double scanned individually for any foreign objects, and fit the same tough standards that human toys do.

It’s those little ways of going the extra mile that make Fluff & Tuff such an amazing brand. It almost feels as if you were the one who designed the toy, because if we’re being honest with ourselves, we can all be a little neurotic when it comes to making sure our furry friends are kept safe! That’s because this family-owned company is headed by pet parents, just like you, and their quality testers are their own canine companions since nobody knows what dogs like better than dogs!

But what exactly makes Fluff & Tuff so “tuff”? The secret is in the extra layer of Tuffweb™ mesh lining and double-stitched seams. In short; everything is super reinforced and ready to withstand a whole bunch of tugging, tossing, and snuggling. Our very own Beamer and Sassy actually have several Fluff & Tuff toys of their own, and we’re proud to report firsthand that they definitely live up to their expectations!

That being said, it’s important to remember that a plush toy is still a plush toy and therefore not indestructible (nothing is when is comes to a dog with a goal!). A common misconception we’ve run into is that people mistake them for chew toys since they’re marketed as a durable brand. They’re definitely durable! But not for extended chewing. That’s why it’s always important to know what types of toys your dog prefers, and to always supervise them during play.

If you still aren’t sold on why we love Fluff & Tuff as much as we do, you should come by Two Bostons and feel one for yourself. “Fluff” isn’t half their name for nothing! There’s a reason dogs love them so much, and we’ve even had reports from pet parents who find typically “un-cuddly” dogs asleep with their fuzzy friends. They’re so soft, you’ll have trouble believing they’re actually dog toys, and with the huge selection of animals to choose from, you might even end up wanting one for yourself. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t!
