You may hear us at Two Bostons talk about the dangers of Tennis Balls, but you have never really understood why.  Let me explain why you will never see a tennis ball at any of our stores.

dog-tennis-ball-by-certified-su-thumb-480x360-15516 (1)Tennis balls can turn a typical game like fetch, for example, into a scary situation.  There are times your dog might catch the ball in his mouth, but farther back than it should go. The ball could get stuck in your pup’s throat, and once this happens it usually blocks off breathing.  This requires immediate action — and if the blockage is not removed right away, your dog many not survive.

There have also been studies showing that the outer layer of a tennis ball is abrasive and can wear down the tooth enamel.  The glue that is used on a tennis ball can also cause the tooth enamel to erode. This is because the natural stickiness allows the glue to stay on teeth long after your pup is finished with the ball itself.  If your pooch likes to chew or eat tennis balls, pieces can also get stuck in the throat, esophagus, or anywhere along the digestive tract.  Fragments can often get lodged in the bowel, and this can require emergency surgery.dog-tennis-ball-by-AndyeMcee

These problems are seen most often in breeds like Labs, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers.  Why? Mainly, sheer size. These larger breeds are more likely to enjoy catching tennis balls and playing a bit more roughly with their toys.  They also have mouths that are large enough to wrap around the entire ball.  But tennis ball fragments can still pose health and choking risks for any size dog.

Fortunately, there are many great alternatives that are safe to use while still having fun! Most toys we carry are made of safe, non-toxic, and/or recycled plastic or rubber.  Many are reinforced with extra-durable seams and stitching.

When it comes to tough, fetch toys, check out the Planet Dog line.  These non-toxic, clean-rinsing toys are made in the USA for energetic players and assertive chewers!  First of all, they all smell like peppermint, so they offer a great little breath-freshening boost with every chew.  But they’re also made of pliable, super durable Orbee-Tuff material.  The special rubberized consistency allows the toy to bounce and float; and it stands up to even the most aggressive chewer because it encourages a dog’s teeth to rebound off the toy instead of puncturing the surface.  Plus, Planet Dog toys are 100% guaranteed against defects…and many are also recyclable.

This is just one of the many safe and durable toy lines that we carry.  Stop by and ask us for more firsthand suggestions!

Here are three easy and healthy recipes that you can put in one of your new Planet Dog toys

  1. Parsley and Yogurt Filling: This recipe is a great cure for dog breath.  It also is a good source of carotenoids, iron, calcium, fiber, and vitamins B, C, and K.  Yogurt is a natural probiotic and builds stronger bones.
    • Add 3 parsley leaves
    • Add 2 scoops of (plain) yogurt
  2. Flax Seed and Cream Cheese Filling: Great for skin and fur! This recipe is also a good source of protein and calcium. Flax seed is a great, affordable, and vegan alternative to fish.
    • Add 1 scoop of flax seed
    • Add 2 scoops of cream cheese
  3. Banana and Pumpkin Filling: This recipe is a good source of potassium, fiber, carotenoids, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, and vitamin A and C.  Pumpkin is great for your dog’s digestion, for firming stools, for overall gland health, and can assist your dog’s transition to a new food.
    • Add 1 inch of banana
    • Add 2 scoops of pumpkin6a00e55221a350883301b7c7aee7cf970b-800wi

Directions:

Planet Dog is one of my favorite toy brands that we carry at our Two Bostons stores — and lucky for us (and you!), we have their amazing new toy, the Orbee-Tuff Snoop.

One of my favorite things about U.S.A.-crafted Planet Dog toys is that they’re completely guaranteed … 100% of the time, every time! They’re made with a special Orbee-Tuff rubber that is designed to help a dog’s teeth rebound off while they’re chewing (instead of sinking in or puncturing the toy). With my border collie Ahsoka chomping all day on her Soccer Ball toy, I’m definitely thankful for this. So far, she loves the Soccer Ball, the Tennis Ball, and the Snoop from the Planet Dog line.

The Snoop is translucent, blue or orange, and squishy. Although it’s definitely tough like other Planet Dog toys, it’s specifically designed for puzzle play that can stimulate your pet’s natural intelligence and curiosity. It has a deep crevice in the center that can conceal a treat on the inside to create a fun challenge for your dog. I always recommend using Stella & Chewy’s Carnivore Crunch, because it’s so tasty and healthy — my girls (like most dogs) will do anything to get it!

Whichever treats you choose to use, pups will nudge the Snoop with their nose, their paws, their forehead, and/or their mouth trying to get those yummy morsels out (which can not only be smelled, after all, but seen right through the toy!). All this activity helps deliver the mental and physical stimulation every dog needs. For even more puzzle fun, take that Orbee-Tuff Tennis Ball or any other 2.5” Orbee-Tuff ball, stuff it into the concave center of the Snoop, and challenge your dog to remove it. Since the Snoop is intended for interactive play, it isn’t necessarily designed to stand up to those dedicated toy-destroyers out there – but it will still be a great way for them to release energy! Just be sure to use with appropriate supervision.

It’s easy to see why the Orbee-Tuff Snoop won the Gold Medal in “Product Innovations” at the 2013 HH Backer Total Pet Expo, which Two Bostons attended last year in Rosemont, IL. It’s fun, durable, cleverly designed, and easy to clean: just fill with hot water, shake vigorously, and rinse. Plus, with every purchase you make from Planet Dog, you help support canine service programs. 2% of every Planet Dog toy sale goes toward the company’s unique grant-giving and product donation programs. More than $850,000 in grants and product donations have already been shared with exemplary non-profits nationwide. That makes these toys an even better choice for your pups at home!

Remember that every Planet Dog and Orbee-Tuff toy — including the Snoop — is non-toxic, made in the U.S.A., and 100% guaranteed any time, every time! Just bring the toy back if it gets damaged or destroyed, and we’ll be happy to replace it. So stop by with your furry friend soon, and our Team Members will be happy to show you the Orbee-Tuff Snoop. You’ll never be puzzled for a playtime solution again!

A lot of us dog owners may not be aware that tennis balls can actually be quite dangerous to our furry friends. They can turn a typical game like playing fetch, for example, into a scary situation. There are times your dog might catch the ball in his mouth, but farther back than it should go. The ball could get stuck in your pup’s throat, and once this happens it usually blocks off breathing. This requires immediate action — and if the blockage is not removed right away, you dog may not survive.

There have also been studies showing that the glue used on tennis ball seams can erode tooth enamel. That’s because the natural stickiness allows this glue to stay on teeth long after your pup is finished with the ball itself. If your pooch likes to chew or eat tennis balls, pieces can also get stuck in the throat, esophagus, or anywhere along the digestive tract. Fragments can often get lodged in the bowel, for instance, and this can require emergency surgery.

But tennis ball fragments can still pose health and choking risks for breeds of any size.

Like tennis balls, there are other toys that are smart to avoid for safety reasons. They include:

  1. Any ball-shaped toy that your dog can fully fit inside his mouth
  2. Bones that are thin, small, or splinter too easily
  3. Jerky treats made (or partially sourced) in certain overseas countries
  4. Commercial rawhide chews, which are not digestible and often contain formaldehyde or bleach

Fortunately, there are many great alternatives that are safe to use with correct supervision. For instance, here are Two Bostons we only offer treats and chews that are completely digestible for cats and dogs. Our products are made and sourced in North America – often locally – with natural ingredients subject to stringent safety standards. Most toys we carry are made of safe, non-toxic, and/or recycled plastic or rubber. Many are reinforced with extra-durable seams and stitching.

Tennis Ball Alternatives

Many dogs can hold one entire tennis ball (or more!) in their mouths — and even smaller fragments pose a serious choking hazard. Fortunately, there are safe, healthy, fun, and tasty alternatives to meet your pup’s chomping and romping preferences.

We’ll talk about some firsthand Team favorites in a future post, but there are a few that are especially awesome. When it comes to toys, for instance, check out the Planet Dog line (see football photo, above). These non-toxic, clean-rinsing toys are made in the USA with energetic players and assertive chewers in mind. First of all, they smell like peppermint, so they offer a great little breath-freshening boost with every chew. But they’re also made of pliable, super-durable Orbee-Tuff material. The special rubberized consistency allows the toy to bounce and float; and it stands up to even the most aggressive chewer because it encourages a dog’s teeth to rebound off the toy instead of puncturing the surface. Plus, Planet Dog toys are 100% guaranteed against defects … and many are also recyclable.

If you’re interested in chomper-friendly alternatives that your dog CAN digest, we carry a number of safe, healthy, non-splintering chews as well. Our customers just love bully sticks, which are made from fully digestible free-range beef with no added hormones, antibiotics, or animal by-products. Himalayan Chews (far right, above) are another huge favorite, which offer a long-lasting boost of flavor and calcium. Then there are Yaky Sticks, which wrap a Himalayan Chew around a bully stick for the best of both worlds! Sam’s Yams are a safe, yummy, all-vegetable hit that are totally digestible. Crocodile Bones are a super-healthy and safe option as well. And don’t forget about antlers (center, above). These are full of calcium and phosphorus and very clean-chewing – no gunky mess on your carpets. At Two Bostons, we carry only the naturally-shed variety in deer, elk, and moose flats.

So stop by and ask us for more firsthand suggestions — then stay tuned for more fun, safe, healthy Team insights in future posts!
