News and Information about Dogs, Cats, and Pet Products

Summer can be very stressful and especially if the furry family member gets anxiety during these hectic months. Does your pet have anxiety from storms, fireworks separation, travel, or their crate or do they show symptoms of excessive barking and whining, shaking, panting, drooling, clawing, hyperactivity, digging, hiding, or clinging?  If your pet has any of these symptoms, Two Bostons has a solution for you to try today!

thundershirtThe Thundershirt is a lightweight, machine-washable spandex and Velcro wrap that works by exerting gentle, constant pressure all around your pet’s rib cage.  It takes just a few seconds to put on, but it provides direct feedback to your pet’s brain – just like when you swaddle a new born baby. Once this rapid-breathing impulse is calmed, respiration begins to ease back to normal and the body relaxes as well.  With most pets, a visible difference can be seen in minutes.

The Thundershirt works…which is why we are able to offer a money-back guarantee.  A survey of customers reports an impressive 85% success rate among pets experiencing anxiety or stress.

The Thundershirt comes in seven different sizes and two colors, grey and pink – bring your pet in and the Two Bostons Team will find them the perfect fit.

We look forward to your visit and hope that we can make Summer = Stress Free!

Hello Friends!  Erica here with a nutrition corner update.

Over the past couple weeks quit a few customers at Two Bostons have mentioned that their dogs have flaky skin.  There are a number of reasons why our cats and dogs may have flaky skin including, under grooming, under or over bathing, a medical issue or dietary deficiency. I am going to focus on dietary deficiencies, specifically omega 3 to omega 6 imbalances.

Dogs and cats require a specific ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids to be healthy.  This balance is somewhere between 2:1 and 4:1.  Dogs that are provided a commercial diet of kibble consume an excessive amount of omega 6 fatty acids compared to omega 3.  Omega 3 fatty acids are very heat sensitive.  Kibble is cooked at a very high temperature and extruded destroying much of the omega 3s in the process thus creating an imbalance.  Pets fed a raw diet may experience an imbalance as well if they do not consume fish regularly.  This imbalance often results in a dull coat and or dry flaky skin.   In excess, omega 6 fatty acids are pro inflammatory and long tern can cause allergies, heart disease, cancer, arthritis and other diseases.

Luckily, Two Bostons makes it easy to provide our pets with a healthy balance of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids.  Excellent sources of omega 3s include salmon, sardines, menhaden fish, and flax seeds.  The shop carries a variety of fish oils that are easy to add to your pet’s daily meal.

A couple of my favorites are salmon oil by Wholistic Pet

and Grizzly Salmon Oil

Both come in a very convenient pump bottle.  You simply add a specific number of pump strokes to your pet’s food depending on their weight. You may also choose to add a dehydrated, freeze dried or raw food containing fish into your pet’s rotation.

OC Raw Dog gets my pick for a raw food containing fish.  Their fish and produce food contains 4 sources of fish, one of which is sardines containing high levels of omega 3s.

If you find a dehydrated food best for your pet, Honest Kitchen has some great options.  Zeal by Honest Kitchen for dogs contains 3 sources of fish, one of which is wild salmon.

Prowl for cats contains flaxseed as a source of omega 3s.

Stella and Chewys makes a popular freeze dried raw food that is very easy to add to your pet’s diet.  Surf and Turf for dog contains whole ground salmon.  They also have a large selection of entrees for cats that contain salmon, tuna, herring, or cod.

You may not notice an immediate change in your pet’s skin and coat.  Your animal will benefit from the omega 3s on the inside first.  As your pet’s internal organs and tissues become healthier and inflammation is reduced you will gradually see an improved coat.  Within 3 to 4 months you should see a bright radiant coat and healthy skin.

So, next time you are at Two Bostons ask one of the team members to help you determine if your pet is receiving the proper fatty acid ratio.

Hello everyone! Quinci here! Looking to treat your dog, but want to keep it healthy?

Check out Kelpies by Pet Kelp! This corn and wheat free kelp based treat made in the USA can do wonders for your pets overall health. Why kelp you ask? Kelp is a type of seaweed that contains a high amount of vitamins and most importantly minerals. The minerals found in kelp helps promote healthy digestion and immune systems. It also can play an aid in improving their overall skin & coat condition.

The Kelpies treats are a soft chew blend of kelp, fruit, omega- rich flax and fish oil and come in four different flavors: Blueberry Wave, Cranberry Cove, Apple Splash and Pumpkin Point. Lots of variety to find your pets’ favorite flavor!

Prefer a biscuit over a soft chew? At Two Bostons we also carry grain-free Sardine & Kelp treats by American National Premium. Although the two mixed together may not sound the most appetizing to you, dogs love them!

Combine the mineral enriched kelp with sardines and salmon oil, and you’ve got a treat that’s loaded with Omega-3s and Coenzyme Q 10, both natural antioxidants. These key ingredients are successful in promoting healthy skin, coat and overall health.

Another benefit of this treat is that they are very easy to break apart meaning easy to share and can help stretch your budget. If your still not convinced, stop by our 75th street store and chat with Jen about the impact Sardine & Kelp has had on Hunter’s life.

Not looking for a treat? Pet Kelp also makes supplements based out of Canada and you can mix them right into their food.

The supplements, safe for dogs and cats contain 70 minerals and vitamins, and are available in three different formulas: Bone & Joint, Skin & Coat and Wellness. The Bone & Joint formula contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin which helps aid your pets overall mobility. The Skin & Coat supplement rich in flax seed, Omega-3s and Omega-6s will relieve your pet from uncomfortable itchy skin and make their coat shine. The Wellness formula provides a full dose of antioxidants with the addition of Nova Scotia blueberries. This supplement can help slow down the aging process in your pet by decreasing the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Is your dog a nervous wreck this time of year? Does the weather report have you trapped? Do you hesitate to invite people over because your dog is too anxious? Do you hesitate to take your dog out because of the same reason? If so, this post is for you!

We have several amazing products that I’d like to introduce you to today to help calm anxious dogs.

The first is the Thundershirt.

This amazing little shirt looks like a regular dog jacket, doesn’t it? Well, I can tell you it is not. It is like a hug for your dog, only, you don’t have to be hugging your dog the entire time…let the shirt do the work for you! It works by applying very gentle pressure on some of the pressure points on your dog’s trunk. It is very easy to use, simply fit the shirt around your dog’s trunk and Velcro it closed. Over 85% of our customers have seen marked improvement with the use of this shirt. Plus, there is a money-back guarantee. So you can try this out on your dog worry free!

Happy Traveler is a great option for a quick chill pill. Think of it like taking an aspirin for a head ache.

The active ingredients in Happy Traveler include Valerian, German Chamomile, L-Tryptophan and St. Johns Wort, all well known herbs for their calming effects. It is a safe, non-toxic option for your dog and you should see results in about 45 minutes.

Another awesome herbal supplement we offer is Calm Shen by Herbsmith.

Calm Shen is made with Chinese herbs and is more of a long-term solution to your dog’s anxiety. If you think of your dog’s health as an arch, where the middle is the place to be, and your dog is all the way to the left or right, Calm Shen will direct your dog’s system back toward the middle. This supplement will build up in your pet’s system with continued use and you will see an over all decrease in anxiety as time progresses.

We also offer Canine Calm Spray.

This nifty little spray acts as a calming aromatherapy for your pooch. Canine Calm contains pure essential oils, including bergamot, lavender and geranium, from plants traditionally used in remedies for relaxation. You can spray this on bedding and in your dog’s crate; however, on of the best ways to calm you pet is to spray it on your hand and rub it into the ears and belly. This awesome spray will help take the edge off for your pet.

The last product I’m going to show you today is Rescue Remedy.

Bach is a trusted name in natural remedies and this is a new variation of the original stress relieving remedy that has been available for more than 70 years. It contains a blend of the same five flower remedies found in Rescue Remedy, Impatiens, Clematis, Star of Bethlehem, Cherry Plum, and Rock Rose in an alcohol free formula, ideal for sensitive pets. The dropper allows you to easily administer it to your pet. This is suitable for use on pets of all shapes and sizes, including: Reptiles, Fish (just add to tank water), Birds, Cats, Dogs, Horses, and Rabbits. For best results, simply place four drops into your pets mouth. If you can’t do that, you can add the drops to food, water or treats or rub them into your pets nose, paws or ears.

Please stop by one of our stores to talk to a team member about which of these awesome products would work the best for your pet’s anxiety.

The snow is officially gone and your yard is…well, let’s just agree that your lawn isn’t looking its most lush, shall we?

And those burnt spots of grass…you thought those were seasonal? They are. Every season, that is.

How is it possible that your dog is burning your lawn year round? Well, it’s not due to an imbalance of PH as you might think. It is nitrogen.

Excessive nitrogen from water in the urine to be specific.

And guess what? One of the main ingredients in lawn fertilizer is nitrogen. Being creatures of habit, your dog likes to relieve him/herself in the same spots time and again. Doing so is akin to dumping a handful of fertilizer over and over again in the same spots ~ thereby burning your lawn.

So how can you fix the problem?

Well, one way is to get your pooch on a higher quality food so that they are processing their nutrients correctly.

The other way is with these:

Dog Rocks.

You heard me! Dog Rocks.

Dog Rocks are really real rocks. No fooling. They are quarried in Australia, and are a safe, non-toxic, all natural remedy to yard burns.

How do you use them?

Well, you don’t scatter them around your yard if that is what you are thinking. You put them in your dog’s water dish and they drink as usual.

Yes, it’s that easy.

They work by binding the excess nitrogen in the drinking water giving your dog a better quality of drinking water (which will actually help your lawn ~ remember the main ingredient in fertilizer?) The rocks contain zeolite traces which are often used in aquariums to filter water safely and naturally.

They are simple to use. Open the bag, rinse the rocks off, place in your dog’s water dish and top off the water to refill rather than start fresh every time.

They will work if your dog drinks from a Drinkwell too. Simply put them in back, under the reservoir.

Have a dog that loves to take them out and play with them? Or a sloppy drinker and you wash your bowl every day? No problem! Simply fill a pitcher with water and put the rocks in there. That way you can use the water from the pitcher every time you fill the bowl and you will still be able to reap the benefits of the rocks.

They work rather quickly…usually within the first 24 hours you will notice your pet will stop leaving new lawn burns. (This does not mean that your current brown patches will go away overnight…you will still have to nurse those back to health, but you won’t have any NEW burns to deal with!)

Dog Rocks are safe for any pet sharing your dog’s water source (such as cats, rabbits, etc.). And, as I said before, they are all natural. No yeast like in other lawn burn prevention products. Landscapers have been known to endorse Dog Rocks since, with the appropriate level of nitrogen, your dog’s urine can actually help your lawn (remember the fertilizer again?)

We carry Dog Rocks in two package sizes. The small package is a 2 month supply and the large package is a 6 month supply. You should use the rocks year round too, since your dog will continue to burn your lawn in every season…you just don’t always see your lawn!

My guy Diesel has THE worst seasonal allergies. The poor guy rubs his face raw and stops playing to scratch himself. While we have him on the best diet (raw and grain free) possible, he still suffers from these flare ups.

This is how he looked last week:

Just look at his sweet face…

He has scratched the area around his eyes raw.

It hurts to just look at.

The poor boy doesn’t complain, but boy does he look pitiful.

And, he doesn’t want to sit for a photograph. I’m going to attribute that to pure embarrassment over the way his face looks. I know I wouldn’t want to have a picture taken if my face was this inflamed. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that he’s a dog.

I had been mentioning to AdreAnne how badly I felt for him and wished there was something more I could do.

Enter Cocotherapy.

This amazing product can be used both topically and ingested. It is an all natural, human grade product that helps with skin and coat, improves digestion, and reduces allergic reactions.

 Cocotherapy has these proven benefits:

Clears up skin conditions such as eczema, flea allergies, contact dermatitis, and itchy skin

Makes coat sleek and glossy

Deodorizes doggy odor

Reduces bad breath

Regulates and balance insulin and thyroid levels

Helps with arthritis or ligament problems

Speeds healing of cuts, wounds, hot spots, and insect bites & stings when applied topically

Gently elevates the metabolism to help provide a higher level of energy

We carry both the Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and the Organic Coconut Chips at both locations.

I have ended up using the oil on his face for about a week and feeding it to him as a “treat”. He loves the taste and laps it right up.

This is Diesel today:

This is after one week of use.

Notice how the redness and swelling have gone down considerably.

Notice how he has teeny tiny hairs growing back.

Notice how he doesn’t want to sit still for a new photograph. I’m going to attribute this to embarrassment over all the fuss I’m making. I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that he’s a dog.

He still clearly has a way to go with healing; however, if Cocotherapy can offer him this amount of relief in one short week, it is definitely worth it’s weight in gold. I wish I had known about it sooner, which is why I’m letting you know.

If your dog is suffering, there is no need. The sooner you can start cocotherapy, the better.
